User Experience
I just read this wonderful post over at the Google Blog regarding how they run their user “experiments”, (Original Post) and it reminded me of what a moving target that web usability still is. What do I mean by “still”? Well, to be truthful, while there are a lot of metrics floating around, and we’re constantly pulling in knowledge from related sources, usability and the web is still in its formative stages. User Experience
Well I’ve decided that it’s about time to start a discourse over a topic that’s very near and dear to my heart: Designing for a UI (User Interface).
The idea here of course is to get some feed back, and outside opinion, regarding what’s important to Verio’s client base. While this blog is going to take on the aspect of a less formal post, it is meant to get you folks thinking about design, and how, in your experience it pertains to a solid UI product.
As with anyone who’s been in a web-related industry for even a short amount of time, it’s very difficult (and rather short-sighted IMHO) to claim that you “know it all”. I’m quite the opposite actually, the longer I’ve been in this industry the more I realize that things change too quickly for me to claim that I have a handle on even the small portion of what I’m actually knowledgeable in. So armed with this insight, I’d like you to read this (and the next few entries that I have planned) with the full intent of telling me what is important and what’s not important in terms of your needs and experiences. Hi all,
Well it’s been awhile since the Signature 4.0 release and I’m sure a few of you are wondering what you might be able to hand to your clients in order better illustrate the highlights and features of the new control panel. This freestanding Flash document can be posted or even handed out to your end-users in order to better educate them on the new Signature interface. As we all know, the happier (more educated) they are, the happier we are.
For our Retail Customers click the link below:
http://labs.verio.net/Verio_Customer.zip
For our Reseller Customers click on the link below:
http://labs.verio.net/Generic_Customer.zip
Instructions: Click on the link above. You will be prompted to “open with” or “save to disc” (download ) the compressed (.zip) file. Download (save to disc) it to your local hard drive. (The file is roughly 19 mb is size, so it might take a while via http) Uncompress it and, making sure all of the documents are in the same directory, point your browser to the index.html file. That should be it. If you have any problems please leave a comment below.
*Note, this will require the Flash Player plugin, which ships with most major browsers. Or which you can download here: Get Flash Player

User Experience
As some of you are undoubtedly aware, we’ve attempted to do a few different things with our release of the Signature 4 control panel. One of those “things” is allowing the user the ability to customize their workspace. While the initial thrust of this effort was aimed at our resellers, and has been termed “re-branding”, it is, in essence, simply the option for the end user to manipulate their UI (user interface) to better suit their work habits. But what I’m mainly interested in here, is how you, our customer, might interact with the CSS. Read more »
